Beware that any partitioning / formatting you do from Mac OS X (Disk Utility) is likely to break the Linux install (Mac OS X on PPC does not try to play nicely with other OSes). Setting up a dual-boot machine with both Mac & Linux is more complicated. Please Log in or Create an account to join the conversation. Its much easier if trying to make the whole machine a Linux box. In fact, reading through the top hit when searching for PPC Linux distros, most of the top 10 distros listed no longer support PPC64 at all. Starting with version 12.04 the 32-bit and 64-bit versions are part of the same package for Macs. Anything before G5 can only use a 32-bit Linux. PPC64 is different from the more modern series of POWER chips running PPC64LE. The only PowerPC Macs that can use a 64-bit operating system are G5 iMacs and Power Macs. This page has an extremely detailed guide on installing Debian for PowerPC. There are some alternatives, though, described in this article. I am going to install a distribution of Linux on to my Power Mac G5 Dual Core 2.5 Ghz PowerPC and i was wondering if anybody had done the same and had any installation advice specific to the G5 PowerPC architecture that i am going to build on. There is no official Flash Player for Linux PPC. This product may address the problem that it is getting harder to find new motherboards with parallel port support. Well, most Linux distros no longer officially support older PowerPC architecture, in this case, PPC64. The problem is that the Flash Player situation would be worse on Linux than on Mac OS X. I plan to measure the performance of the product and compare it to a conventional LinuxCNC system. They are not needed, because the USB dongle has a memory buffer that mimics the performance of a real time system. This is a stripped down build of LinuxCNC and the "tkmini" gui, that removes the real time components. Even on Linux, there is no Adobe Flash Player PPC and I dont even know how many other Linux apps work on PPC so you may be just as limited on Linux as with Mac OS X 10.5. It may be possible to do a build of the software for your Mac G5. There are also builds for Windows and Linux. Then added the Rage128 XFree86 video driver: apk add xf86-video-r128. The software runs natively on the Mac, no installation of Linux is needed. Firstly, added the Xorg packages: apk add xorg-server xf86-video-vesa xf86-input-evdev xf86-input-mouse xf86-input-keyboard udev. It worked right out of the box with very little effort. I recently acquired a USB dongle from for a very reasonable price, which allows my intel iMac running Mac OSX 10.9.2 to control 4 stepper motors using Eckler's "rtstepper" software.
